Ground Floor Vacancies in Core Areas

2015
Percentage of ground floor store front businesses in the Core areas that are currently vacant. This information is displayed for each of the three cores of the city and as a city-wide total. Percentages are displayed for three core areas of Cambridge as a whole and then as their separate core identities.

Based off of a visual survey conducted in the downtown cores, only takes into consideration occupied store fronts versus vacant store fronts, GFA is not considered. In total there are 537 ground floor commercial structures in the Cambridge cores, with 456 being occupied and 81 being vacant as of September 2016.

This metric is used as one measure of the City’s core area strategy to measure the economic health of the cores. It should be noted that a 5% to 7% vacancy is considered healthy as it allows for choice of location and maintains rents at a competitive level.
